Scholarship Program Established
In support of our mission statement, the WLA Board of Directors has established a $250.00 Youth Environmental Scholarship (ages 13 to 18) focused on furthering the preservation and conservation of lake, ponds, and water resources in Maine. Applicants must be related to a current WLA member.
Scholarships will be awarded based on the criteria listed on attached application. Scholarship recipients will be obligated, upon completion of approved program, to provide a letter to the WLA Board outlining new knowledge gained and how it might be applied to their lake experiences and in their personal lives over time. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin or state of physical handicap. All scholarships are subject to availability of funds and will be granted at the discretion of the Board. Download the application here.
Application materials must include an essay validating qualifications and expected potential benefits. They should be sent to Gert Downs, 812 Kennebec Street, Rumford, Maine 04276, by May 1st of each year. Applicant phone number and address must be included. Applications will be promptly reviewed and the selected recipient confirmed by the WLA Board at its May Board meeting.
Announcement of the Youth Environmental Scholarship will be posted in the WLA fall and winter newsletters. All applicants, including the recipient, will be notified regarding status no later than June 1 of the year in question. The name of the scholarship recipient will be published in the WLA newsletter.
